Assalam-o-Alaikum friends!

Today we talk about something very deep and beautiful – the special time of night for worship and meeting Allah. Just like a groom eagerly waits for the night to meet his bride, our Mashaykh and Allah’s friends used to wait for the darkness of night to meet their true Beloved (Allah).

Allah Ta’ala has said about some of His servants: “There are some of My servants who love Me, so I love them. They yearn for Me, and I yearn for them. They remember Me, and I remember them.” When night falls, darkness spreads, beds are laid out, and the lover draws close to the Beloved. Their feet stand in prayer, their faces fall in prostration before Me. Silently they please Me with My own words. How beloved is Tahajjud prayer to our Lord!

Which is Superior – Day or Night?

Two scholars once debated: one said the day is superior, the other said the night. The one who favored the day gave reasons: daylight brings light, alertness, activity. Three prayers – Fajr, Zuhr, Asr – are in the day. Jummah prayer is also in the day, erasing sins from the previous Jummah, making it like Eid for believers.

The one who favored the night replied: The hearts of the Arifeen (knowers of Allah) are the suns of the night. If wakefulness and activity are in the day, Allah commanded His Beloved to stand in prayer at night too. Day has movement and business, but night has intimate conversation (Munajat) with Allah. The strongest proof: Allah created one night – Laylatul Qadr – better than a thousand months. Even if days are included in those months, one night outweighs them all.

He added: Night is the time for lover and Beloved to meet. Allah called His Prophet on Mi’raj at night – Subhanalladhi asra. Even today, the world talks to loved ones at night – mobile companies say “Talk all night.” Allah’s friends do the same: they talk to Allah all night, from Isha to Fajr. SubhanAllah! This is the path of love for Allah.

Allah’s Love for His Servants – From Revelation to Yahya and Dawud (AS)

Allah revealed to Yahya (AS): When a servant truly loves Me and I look into his heart and see no love except for Me, I become his ears to hear, eyes to see, hands to hold. I make everything else distasteful to him. His heart finds no joy except in Me. I become his companion, the fulfillment of his hopes. Every moment I love him more. He recites My words with attention, so I listen to his words attentively. He calls upon Me, and I accept his dua. By My Honor and Majesty, on the Day of Judgment I will stand him with such honor that the former and latter people will envy him. I will announce: “This is so-and-so, son of so-and-so – the Wali of Allah, the chosen one of Allah. I have chosen him among My creation. I have called him for My visitation so he may cool his eyes by seeing My Face.”

To Dawud (AS), Allah revealed: When My Wali comes before Me on Judgment Day, I will welcome him with love like a long-separated friend welcomes his friend. Just like a wife prepares the home, cleans, cooks, dresses the children, watches the clock eagerly for her husband returning after a year – her joy knows no bounds. Allah’s love for His returning servant is many times greater.

Allah told Dawud (AS): “Tell My servants who seek My love: What does it matter if creation keeps you behind a veil? I lift the veil between Me and you. Look at Me with the eyes of your heart. You have made a profitable trade – you left the world, see what reward you received!”

Dawud (AS) used to fast alternate days – one day fast, one day break – struggling against the nafs to get closer to Allah. Allah said: “O Dawud, control your desires, keep distance from unlawful – I will lift the veil between us.”

Allah’s Yearning for the Returning Sinner

Allah told Dawud (AS): “If only those who turn away from Me and get busy with the world knew how much I wait for them, how gentle I am with them, how eager I am for them to leave sins – they would die of longing in that eagerness!”

Then even more amazing: “O Dawud, if this is how I deal with those who turn away, then imagine how I deal with those who turn towards Me – those who leave their homes, lie on hot stones in summer heat seeking Me!”

Allah said to Bani Israel: “O children of Dawud, tell your young ones: I am yours – why do you become lovers of others?”

Allah is so Generous! He is the true Friend: “I am the Friend of whoever befriends Me. I am the companion of whoever sits with Me. I am the listener for whoever remembers Me. I obey whoever obeys Me. I fulfill the heart’s desires of whoever calls Me sincerely.”

Whoever seeks Me finds Me. Whoever chases others never finds true Beloved.

The Value of a Pure Heart and Allah’s Immense Generosity

Allah bought the souls and wealth of believers in exchange for Jannah. The buyer is Allah – the greatest Buyer gives the highest price even for ordinary things. The deal-maker is Prophet Muhammad (SAW). Despite our flaws, Allah set the price as Jannah – eternal blessings!

He did not say “I sold Jannah for your souls and wealth” – because a seller is needy or seeks profit. Allah’s Majesty is free from that. He said: “I have purchased your souls and wealth in exchange for Jannah.” One-sided decision from the Most Generous!

The human soul is low-value, yet Allah paid Jannah for it. So what will be the value of a pure heart (Qalb Saleem) on Judgment Day? No creation can match it – the reward is Allah’s Vision in Jannah.

Slaves are bought in the world and named after their master. Allah bought us and named us “Momin” – matching His own name Al-Momin. He honored us, protected us with angels, and when we grow old in His worship, He feels shy to punish us. “My servant spent his life in My worship – bones weak, body tired. How can I punish him?”

Signs of True Love for Allah

True love for Allah cools the heart from worldly attachments. When Allah’s love occupies a young person, it detaches him from everything else.

Love has two kinds:

  • Nafsani/Shaytani love – harmful, leads to sin or even kufr if not repented.
  • Permissible love – even if halal, it comes at a cost (pain, sacrifice). Adam (AS) loved Habil – Qabil killed him. Nuh (AS) loved his son – drowned before his eyes. Ibrahim (AS) loved Ismail (AS) – commanded to sacrifice. Every worldly love, even halal, brings tests. Allah wants love only for Him – or for creation because of Him (for piety, character).

Beauty is skin-deep. Remove the skin – flesh is the same. Yusuf (AS) – half of world’s beauty given to him – sold for a few worthless coins. Those crazy for outward beauty destroy their faith for something so cheap.

Six things have no reliability: cloud shadow, bad friend, unlawful wealth, liar’s praise, tyrant’s power, love for women.

Only Allah’s love is true and worthy. Whoever loved Rahman beautified his life.

How to Increase Love for Allah

  1. Recite Quran – nothing gives more pleasure to the lover than words of the Beloved.
  2. Nawafil (extra prayers) – bring closeness to Allah.
  3. Love for Prophet Muhammad (SAW).
  4. Reflect on Allah’s favors and blessings.
  5. Ponder Allah’s beautiful names (Rahim, Sattar, Kareem).
  6. Sit in the company of Allah’s lovers.

Hadith: Whoever loves that Allah and His Messenger love him should:

  • Speak truth.
  • Fulfill trusts.
  • Be good to neighbors.

Do these three – Allah and His Messenger will love you.

Abundance of Dhikr (remembrance) also increases love for Allah.

May Allah grant us true love for Him, make us among those who worship Him in the nights, and accept our efforts. Ameen.
